TRANSPORT fares on the Mbale-Kampala highway have normalised after Tirinyi Road was re-opened on Tuesday.

The fares from Kampala to Mbale, which had been increased to sh20,000, are back to sh10,000, while the fares from Namutumba to Iganga are back to sh2,500 from sh5,000.

The fares were hiked following the closure of the road in December to enable repairs on a culvert at River Mpologoma that collapsed during heavy rains.

Temporary taxi parks that had been established on either side of the river have been abandoned.
The eating places have also been dismantled, leaving behind heaps of rotting garbage emitting a foul smell.

The New Vision on Wednesday established that all check points where drivers had to reportedly bribe security men with sh20,000 to get through the bridge have been removed.

Eng. William Kabeho, the executive engineer of the Ministry of Works, said the road repairs are almost complete.

“We temporarily filled one side with murram after laying the culvert to let vehicles through.”

Kabeho said the other side of the road, which is still closed, would be given a firm stone-base before workers shift to the other side.
“It will take us a few days to do this.”
