JONAM county in Nebbi district has emerged winner in implementing adult learning in the West Nile.

During a graduation ceremony recently, the LC3 chairman, Lawrence Okecha, handed over a trophy to the county, commending it for having the highest number of adult learners than Padyere and Okoro counties, where many learners dropped out.

The Uganda Programme of Literacy for Transformation (UPLIFT), an NGO in Nebbi, is behind the promotion of adult education.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony at Parombo sub-county, Okecha applauded the NGO for educating the communities, which has scaled down poverty in homesteads.

“This is a good gesture. We cannot make a breakthrough in fighting poverty if the communities are illiterate,” said Okecha.
UPLIFT management adviser Tom Gossen urged men not to shy away from adult education, saying education had no age limit.

Earlier, the NGO had reported that many men in the district do not study saying they feel ashamed to share classes with their wives and children.

UPLIFT is a member of Literacy Network, an NGO which works with civil society organisations to support adult education.

Literacy Network coordinator Stella Keihangwe said informal learning supports formal education because it reduces the cycle of secondary illiteracy.
