FORMER champion Davis Agaba was upset by little-known Arthur Segwanyi in the final of the national junior chess championship on Sunday.

The three-day event that attracted 64 participants at Lugogo came to a climax with five youngsters earning themselves a right to represent Uganda.

Segwanyi, Joel Wegoye, Agaba, Patrick Kawuma and Gerald Mutyaba will feature for the national team at the Africa junior championship slated for December in Kampala.

To reach the helm, Segwanyi, 18, won eight of the nine games losing only one to top contender Patrick Kawuma who had the best pawn storm in the tournament.

Gerald Kato, Hamis Semanda, Innocent Kimera, Nelson Mubiru, Wegoye and Agaba all fell victim to Segwanyi, who produced the best attacks against the king.

Semanda won the 12-14 years age category while Mohammed Kikasima dominated the 5-11 years age bracket.

Girls’ defending champion Rita Nansove retained her crown for the 15-20 category while Fiona Mutesi won in the girls’ 5-11 years bracket.

Sports Outreach Ministries, an NGO that uses sports to reach out to the disadvantaged, had something to smile about at the first appearance.

Out of the 23 children from the organisation, Mutyaba caused upsets and finished among the top five.
