SOME 20 buyers are still interested in the controversial Uganda Railways Corporation property in Luzira although it has been cleared, fenced off and under military guard.

Touring plot 73-75 Lake Drive, Port Bell yesterday, they failed to inspect the property due to the barricade that was allegedly put up by a top government official.

They murmured: “This one has already been boarded off. I can see it has already been cleared and fenced off. Was it sold and later retrieved?”

But the corporation engineer, Arinitwe, assured them: “Never mind about that. Just bid for it and we will give it to you. ”

He said when the property was advertised last week, “Some one big in the Government rushed and fenced it off. So since we cannot enter inside, we shall view it from outside. But we are selling it as advertised and encourage you to bid for it.”

The acting chief executive officer of the corporation, Noel Muhangi, reiterated his earlier statements: “We are selling the property as advertised. If we did not want to sell it, we would have withdrawn it from the plots that are up for sale. We do not want to succumb to people’s wish. This is government property and no one is above the law.”

The Privatisation Unit advertised eight developed plots and two undeveloped ones in Port Bell, Mulago, Mutundwe and Kisugu as part of the reform of the railways sector.

The other properties in Luzira were also toured.
