Mukono Police blocks DP rally
MUKONO
The Police yesterday blocked the Democratic Party (DP) from holding a rally. The rally was intended to celebrate a High Court ruling nullifying the election of Mukono North MP, the Rev. Peter Bakaluuba Mukasa. Earlier in the morning, the Police had running battles with DP supporters who tried to erect a shelter intended for the rally. The supporters led by DP publicist Betty Namboze, defied Police chief Kale Kayihura’s orders not to hold the rally. Central region Police chief Benson Oyo Nyeko said: “These people are just after causing commotion. They very well know that today is a public holiday and it is a national day. We can’t have two celebrations. The IGP advised them to shift their rally to another day.”

Rights group warns on PRA
KAMPALA
The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative has condemned the continued detention and court’s decision not to grant bail to the People’s Redemption Army (PRA) suspects. The suspects include Col. Kizza Besigye’s brother Joseph Musasizi. In a statement yesterday, the rights group said: “The continued denial of the right to bail and use of force against individuals seeking to express themselves negates the very principle of democratic governance.”

LRA urged on talks venue
KAMPALA
The head of the government peace team, Ruhakana Rugunda, has appealed to LRA leaders Joseph Kony and Vincent Otti to quickly reconsider their position on the venue for the talks and resume talks. Rugunda said: “Kony and Otti should seize this unique opportunity and ensure that their delegation returns to the round table. They should forward their concerns so that the talks are concluded and people return to their homes.”
