THE Minister of Education and Sports, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, has warned private schools who run deceptive advertisements on the Internet to stop.

Bitamazire said many private schools vigorously advertise via their websites and on television, boasting of facilities which they do not possess.
“Many foreign students have fallen victim. They leave their home countries to come and study in Uganda, only to find a residential house converted into a school,” she said.

Bitamazire revealed that the ministry plans to grade private schools based on the facilities they have.

“Those which are registered, have Uganda National Examination Board centre numbers and have science labs, computer labs and well qualified teachers would be put in first class. We shall monitor their adverts to help foreign students, who are the most affected,” Bitamazire vowed.

Bitamazire was speaking at the opening of the second annual education exhibition at Lugogo yard on Thursday
Organised by the Ministry of Education, in conjunction with Afroeducare, the exhibition was expected to showcase the best Uganda can offer in education.
Stanbic, Centenary Rural Development Bank and Monitor Publications sponsored the exhibition.

Participants included the South African Embassy, secondary schools, kindergartens and institutions of higher learning.

The minister commended the exhibition, hailing its quality. She said it had led to the increased marketability of education in Uganda.

She appealed for more investment in Ugandan schools so it could compete on the global stage.

The minister also asked rich parents to take their children to private schools so that the Government could cater for the less privileged under the Universal Primary Education scheme.
