MERCY Chelangat goes to the MTN national cross-country race on Saturday favourite after a great start to the year.

The 14-year-old Standard High Club runner proved her worth by winning the competitive Bukwo road race last Saturday,

All indications are that Chelangat will be hard to beat as defending junior women’s champion Jackline Cherutwo could only manage sixth place last weekend.

Chelangat is a cousin to Africa 10000m champion Moses Kipsiro.

The top finishers in the race will also book places on the national team to the world championships to be held in Mombasa next month.

She will however not have it all her way as the Bukwo race showed. She has to contend with a chasing pack of Dorcus Chesang and Rebecca Cheptagai of Arua Athletics Club.

The duo, who stepped up training ever since World 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru joined camp, will lead Arua Athletics Club’s bid to win the title for a fourth year in a row.

Standard High’s Doreen Chesang and Linet Toroitich will be the other contenders.
