THE Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers’ Association (UTODA) will announce lower transport fares this week, the body’s national chairman, John Ndyomugyenyi, has revealed.

Ndyomugyenyi said this after meeting stage managers of the new and old taxi parks.

This follows complaints from passengers about the ever-increasing transport fares, which have almost doubled in some cases.

He explained: “We have compiled a list of all fares for each stage. We are to meet the transport minister before releasing the list by Tuesday.”

Ndyomugyenyi elaborated that UTODA was making announcements on radio stations appealing to taxi drivers not to hike the fares when children are going back to school.

The First Term for primary and secondary schools will begin today.
The rates will be displayed on taxis loading passengers.

Ndyomugyenyi said short route drivers had hiked the rates because of persistent traffic jams, pot holes, floods and dilapidated feeder roads.

The charges to and from the city suburbs have increased by between sh200 and sh500.
