Residents of Bwaise III parish who live along Nsooba drainange channel are unhappy with LC3 chairman, Nasser Takuba over floods.

The residents said Takuba has always given empty promises about cleaning Nsooba channel, which is full of dirt and sewage, making them vulnerable to diseases.

The chairman of the rescue committee, Zakharia Bisase said: “Instead of coming to listen to our grievances, he has sent law enforcement officers to disperse our meeting.”

“We are desperate to be rescued from the floods. We have lost many lives and property,” said Aidah Katupeni who lost her 16-year-old son on January 13, after he fell into Nsooba channel.

The committee’s information secretary, Regina Bayiyana, agreed that the channel had increased floods in the area due to the failure of the council to clean it.

Takuba, however, blames the problem on the narrow drainage channels which cannot accommodate enough running water.

He, however, admitted that the situation was beyond the division’s control.

He insisted that the mess worsened because residents staying along the channel have continously frustrated plans to expand the channel to enable it carry more water.

The works and communications minister, John Nasasira, on a recent tour said a poor drainage system, the blocking of culverts with rubbish, as well as poor planning had contributed to the floods.

Area MP Richard Sebuliba said the problem of floods and poor sanitation has been greatly worsened by the Northern Bypass project. “This project has been disastrous. It increased the volume of floods, dust and sewage.

People are more vulnerable to disease and poor conditions of living,” he said.
