Kenya’s crackdown on Ugandans living in the country illegally intensified on Thursday when 16 more were arrested in Lugari in Western province. Those nabbed included 14 men and two women who were heading to Eldoret in a taxi from Bungoma. Lugari police boss Peninah Kinyua said the suspects were arrested at a roadblock near Lwandeti market and taken to Lumakanda police station. She explained that they failed to produce official documentation that showed that their presence in the country was legal. Kinyua added that the Ugandans claimed that they were heading to Marakwet district to look for casual jobs. Recently, a Bungoma court jailed six Ugandans for two months each after they admitted being unlawfully present in Kenya, while it deported nine others for the same reason.

The Police arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion that she murdered her step-daughter. The officer-in-charge of criminal investigations, Christopher Kwerit, on Thursday said Brenda Mirembe of Nabirere village in Namalemba sub-county was arrested after a tip-off from her neighbours. He said Mirembe reportedly used a sharp instrument to pierce one-year-old Gift Namugaya’s eyes and cut off other parts of her body until she died. The neighbours said Mirembe had made it a habit of mistreating the girl, whose mother divorced her father, Moses Wanume. He said Mirembe claimed to be punishing the girl for crying over minor issues.

A grade two magistrates court in Fort Portal has remanded a 50-year-old man charged with defiling his 10-year-old daughter. Patrick Bamwanjaraof Kiniyaga, Kicheche sub-county in Kamwenge district, allegedly committed the offence on December 30, 2006, while his wife had gone to attend a burial. Court, presided over by Godfrey Bindeeba, heard on Thursday that Bamwanjara pulled the girl to his bedroom and had forced her to have sexual intercourse with him, warning her not to say anything or he would cut her into pieces. The prosecution said the victim’s mother saw her walking awkwardly and managed to get the story out of the girl.
