ATTANUS Mugerwa didn’t have to sweat to register a winning start in the National Boxing Open yesterday. The former national boxer gave defending champions Lukanga their first win with a walk-over Naguru’s Moses Kanyike.

But it was Kampala Boxing Club who got off to a thrilling start. Flyweight Alex Lukwago gave the down town club the tournament’s first victory — a unanimous points win over Kiggwe’s Denis Yiga.

The big crowd in a refurbished Lugogo main hall was treated to a cocktail of boxing and music featuring artistes like Sweet Kid, Obsessions and Bobby Wine.
On card were four special contests — one involving primary school children Adam Kassim (son of professional boxer Adam Kassim) and Moses Miiro.

Justin Juuko, who Rogers Ddungu beat to become boxing boss, was at the ringside together with education and sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi, NCS chairman Wilson Tumwine and general secretary Jasper Aligawesa.

Action continues today with a 42 bout schedule that will be highlighted by a lightweight fight between Sharif Bogere and Besuwa Musasizi.

National captain Eddy Akora will at light welter be tested by Masindi’s Musisi Ssempebwa.

A total of 42 clubs entered the weeklong competition from which the national squad will be named.

However conspicuously missing was the computer scoring system which Ddungu had promised.
