“I expected to excel but not to be among the best. I attribute my luck to God, my teachers who taught me well as well as my fellow students,” said Calvin Mwesigwa, one of the top five students from Gombe Senior Secondary, Mpigi.

Accompanied by his mother, Eva Mugayo, and his younger sister, Mwesigwa thanked his teachers for the work done.

He wants to be a civil engineer like his father Simon Mugayo

Another top student of Gombe, Kato Desmond Daniel, attributed his success to The New Vision education pullout. His father, Ssalongo Kikambi who came along with him said: “The New Vision pull-out has made it. I used to buy the pullout every week and when I ran short of money, I could go down to Owino Market and buy an old newspaper cheaply.”

The deputy director of studies, Henry Semakula, noted that the good performance of the school was due to continuous assessment, weekend tests and daily exercises and discussions..

“The headteacher, Hajji Mugaga, is very committed to academics,” he added.

Eric Afema, who emerged among the top six in Mpigi district, was speechless. Accompanied by his parents, Wuma Samuel and Wuma Mary, he exclaimed: “God made me excel. I prayed hard and God answered my prayers.”
