ABRAHAM Chepkirwok made his debut in the 1000m race by winning the BW Bank meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany on Monday.

The world junior 800m bronze medallist sprinted to the finish in two minutes, 20.75 seconds, beating Irishman James Nolan to the tape.

It was the Puma-sponsored athlete’s debut over the distance, running under Pace Sports management.

Meanwhile, the local track and field season starts today with the national over-distance meet at Kyambogo sports ground.

The event has been shifted from Makerere as the pitch there is being prepared for the All Africa University Games slated for 2008.

In the meet, athletes will run a distance which is over the normal, as they try to shift their focus from the road and cross country to the track events.

“It is a race that helps athletes shift from the off season to the track and field season. We have those events that are not usually run,” explained local athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.

UAF publicist Namayo Mawerere said that they have always aimed at having track and field athletes test themselves for a normal distance competition in the season as well as keep their stamina.

“It is a non-qualifying event as there is no qualifying time. It is just a season opener,” Mawerere said.

The day’s events include 3000m, 1600m, 1000m, 600m, 300m and 150m for both men and women in addition to short put, high jump and javelin.

On the international scene, Aloysius Byamukama adds, Uganda Athletics Federation is looking for sh34m in order to participate in next month’s World Cross-country Championship in Mombasa, Kenya on March 24.

Federation treasurer Godfrey Nuwagaba said that they have made an estimated budget of sh29m for athletes’ accommodation, travel and upkeep while in Kenya, and sh5m for the team’s training expenses before leaving for Mombasa.

“The team needs to train before going for the competition and that needs some money. We must also spend on accommodation and transport to, fro and within Mombasa,” Nuwagaba explained.

Local companies MTN-Uganda, Busscar and Scandinavian Bus Express have, on a number of occasions, come out to give a hand to the athletics federation.

Meanwhile, the selected players will enter residential training in Bukwa today.

The technical committee selected the teams according to international regulations of six (maximum) and four (minimum) in both the men and women senior and junior categories respectively.

Stars like Boniface Kiprop, Isaac Kiprop, Moses Kipsiro, Wilson Busienei as well as Dorcus Inzikuru, Jane Suuto and Catherine Webombesa are on the team.

The Uganda team will be in Mombasa two days before the event.
