SIR — The Kampala city engineer should take a walk on Kampala streets to enable him rectify the city plan. On Namirembe road, just opposite Nakivubo Stadium, there is an open cesspool spilling waste on the road.

The engineer will note that most manholes are open, which is dangerous to pedestrians. He will also note that many vehicles are parked on the pavements of the streets. This is why the pavements are in bad shape.

He will realise that at almost every 200 metres, there is a stench from the broken old pipes that need replacement.

Mr. Engineer will learn that Market Street is littered with rubbish up to midday everyday, accompanied by a stench from the old dustbins. Modern dustbins are necessary in our city.

The engineer will also note that along Wilson Road, there is Arua Park with very old and dirty structures that need replacement as Uganda is preparing for CHOGM.

He will also remind the owners of most buildings in Kampala city to repaint them. He may even choose to have a general cleaning day in the city to improve on its cleanliness as it used to be in the 1970s.
