NAKAWA authorities have taken over all the markets in the division that fall under Kampala City Council, the town clerk, John Gateni, has said.

This was after contractors failed to manage the markets and abide by the agreements made with the division management.

“Due to poor management and failure to play their role as agreed with management, we have decided to take over all the markets in the division.”
According to a report released by the finance committee, the division lost sh210m in the last six months through mismanagement of markets.

The report reveals that sh243m was budgeted as revenue out of market fees, but only sh32m was realised.
Gateni said they would not tolerate any contractor who failed to submit expected revenue.

“We shall take over all markets. we plan to advertise new tenders,” Gateni said. The markets include Nakawa, Bugolobi, Ntinda and Kiswa.

Meanwhile, Makindye East MP Michael Mabikke has urged Nakawa vendors to take over their market.

Officiating at the launch of ESCCOM, a garbage collection firm in the division on Thursday, Mabikke said: “You are the ones who know the problems in your market. get organised. we in parliament are ready to support you so that you get the tender to manage your market.”
The council has recently been involved on other market wrangles around the city.

Nakasero Market traders rioted last week over claims that the council leased out ‘their market’ to tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba’s Sheila Investments.

Basajjabalaba is also said to owe KCC over sh4b in market fees arrears from Nakasero and St. Balikuddembe markets.
