PARENTS in Bamunanika county in Luweero want the education ministry to allow pupils who sat Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) before 2006 access Universal Secondary Education.

The ministry decreed that only candidates who sat PLE in 2006 should be considered under the free education scheme.

However, while meeting their Woman MP, Rebecca Lukwago, over the weekend, the parents said the condition had limited intake since few pupils sat PLE in 2006.

They argued that many of their children who had done exams in 2004 and 2005 were out of school because they could not afford secondary school fees.

Secondary school enrolment in Luweero stands at 4 percent. This means only 40 out of every 100 pupils who sit PLE makes it to a secondary school.

The Kamira LC3 chairman, Livingstone Kategaya, asked the MP to rally other legislators to influence the ministry change the policy.

Lukwago, however, was non-committal on the plea and instead urged the parents to find means of raising money and educating their children. She added that the much anticipated Bonna Bagaggawale (prosperity for all) scheme would only benefit the hardworking people and those with a saving culture.
