MUSIC: WHO WIll Take 2007?

Mar 01, 2007

Traditionally, the songs that catch the public’s attention in the first quarter of the year go on to dominate the music scene throughout the year. Gilbert Mwijuke and Titus Serunjogi look at what is big so far

Bobi Wine — Kikomando
He was at the top of his game last year. And fans are eagerly waiting to see if the PAM Awards Artiste of The Year can still churn out songs as huge as Omwana Wabandi.
Kikomando is the first single off Bobi Wine’s forthcoming album. The song urges people to be content with the little they have. The word ‘kikomando’ is ghetto slang for a dish made of chapatti and beans.
The production is impressive and so is the melody. But the lyrics are disappointing. Bobi Wine’s songwriting is usually better than this. More so, Bobi Wine is still wrangling with Jingo Sho, another singer who also released a song with the same title.
However, every club goes crazy when the song is played while other people sing along to it in their cars.

Chagga — Nsaba Lugaba
Although the year 2006 was not good for Chagga in a social context, he still managed to drop a worthwhile six-track album, Omutima Gwange. Chagga shows no sign of giving up in 2007. His latest hit is Nsaba Lugaba.

Jose Chameleone — Ataasiga Nsigo
Chameleone boasts of a catalogue of hits since he released his debut hit, Maama Mia in 2001.
And from his Leone Island, he will soon be coming out with another potential hit, Ataasiga Nsigo which might also be the title of his next album.

Iryn Namubiru — Newaddeyo
After her award-winning Nkuweeki, Namubiru is back with Newaddeyo. The love song, that could well suit a wedding march, has all the charms that endeared Namubiru to many people last year. These are her smooth flowing vocals, perfect harmony and sweeping high notes. It is yet to hit the top of the charts but it is already a favourite on radio request shows.

Buchaman — Tonimba
Many people said Buchaman is a one-hit-wonder when he fizzled out of the limelight after the success of his debut, Lwaki Temumatira.
However, all signs are that Buchaman is yet to give up. With the help of producer Tony Houls, Buchaman is plotting a huge comeback with a seven-track album. He has been performing the title track, Tonimba at concerts.

Nubian Li — Nakazi
A year ago, nobody knew him, or had even heard of his music. However, thanks go to Bobi Wine, who helped catapult him into the limelight after Nubian Li featured on his two hits, Adamu ne Kaawa and Ghetto.
Nubian Li is now working on his debut solo album. The most impressive song on the album is the reggae rendition of Bobi Wine’s Nakazi.

City Limit Crew — Na Lo
Ronnie Banton and Dr. Proper are indisputably some of the best stage performers in the land. Their latest impressive single, Na Lo, is receiving ample airplay on FM radio stations. The song is catchy enough to make it to the top 10 songs of the 2007 list. It is also the title of their upcoming 10-track album, which will be out soon.

Sarah Zawedde — Ndi Mukazi
After the success of Kambeere Naawe, many people thought that her few minutes of fame were winding up. But Ndi Mukazi, a superior slice of reggae will certainly keep Zawedde’s candle burning in 2007.

Bebe Cool — Obufumbo
Obufumbo is a reggae track in which a woman is told what to expect in relationship. It talks of things like rumours, quarrels, resentment and acceptance. The mix of Bebe Cool’s rough voice with a lady’s cool voice in the background makes the song quite sensational. Obufumbo is very popular among listeners of Luganda FM radios. The song shows a mature side of Bebe Cool.

Ragga Dee — Calypso
As his name suggests, he was initially a Ragga artiste. But his music has since changed, and critics are getting problems categorising it. His music is simply too comic! After releasing Letter O last year, Ragga Dee is back with Calypso.

Ngoni — Mimi na Wewe
Since the release of Digi two years ago, the Ngoni have churned out many hits. This year, they have done Mimi na Wewe and a collaborative single, Black, Yellow, Red with Richard Kaweesa.
Altogether, many artistes have not shown any signs of veering from their old musical styles. However, their new songs are more appealing.
