SIR — On Monday, you reported that the Government had been told to shut down Iganga road. The article refers to a petition submitted to the Speaker by residents of Mayuge and Iganga districts regarding the condition of Jinja-Bugiri road. It proposed that traffic from Iganga be diverted through Mayuge to Musita while that from Jinja be diverted after Magamaga.
The Ministry of Works and Transport through the Road Agency Formation Unit (RAFU), is aware of this problem. However, contractual and technical constraints meant that no work on this section could commence until a detailed investigation was completed in January 2007. Following this, RAFU has instructed the contractor to provide temporary sealing of this section with a view to reduce dust pollution.
The option proposed by the petitioners is both technically and economically unfeasible and will lead to unwarranted disruption to traffic and the works programme.
Practical measures are in place to maintain the existing road in motorable condition until permanent works are undertaken and completed.
The project is on schedule and it expects faster progress once the temporary emergency sealing works on Musita and Bulanga section is completed. Traffic on this section will be diverted to the temporary paved diversion while permanent works take place on the unpaved Musita/Bulanga section.
However, speeding and reckless driving is a constant cause for concern. We need the support of the Police, local leaders and the general public to help control the defaulting drivers and reduce the risk of accidents. We urge local leaders to work with RAFU and the contractor to sensitise people about this project.
The project has established a customer liaison desk at the district engineer’s office in Jinja town, please visit it.
