NATIONAL champion Stephen Odwar and Ali Ngaimuko will clash in the second MTN track and field trials 100m event at Pece stadium, Gulu today, writes Norman Katende.

The Arua-based Ngaimuko, who won a bronze medal in the Zone V ANOCA games in Nairobi last year, missed a possible head-to-head tussle with Odwar at the national championship in Bugembe last year because he was participating in the post primary athletics event.

“Odwar is already here while Ngaimuko is on the way. We expect a good race,” said local athletics federation official Faustin Kiwa. There are cash prizes at stake.

Yossam Kassango, beaten to the title by mini seconds at Bugembe is also expected to add spice to the event.

National star Annet Kabasindi (javelin) is expected to feature in the trials where Samuel Egadu, Waiswa Lukungu and Paskar Owor will clash in the 400m category.

Meanwhile, Reuben Olita adds that five winners in last year's World cross country in Japan will be in Mombasa for the showcase on March 24.

Three Ethiopians Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba and Gelete Burka will be among the runners.

Junior runner, Kenya’s Pauline Korikwiang, will feature in the 8km event, having upgraded from the 4km that was scrapped.

With a format change, there is one senior men’s and one senior women’s race to be contested in Mombasa.
