An escape attempt by a thug in Katwe, a city suburb, yesterday ended in tragedy when irate residents set fire at the entrance of a tunnel he had taken refuge in. The unidentified man suffocated to death. Katwe Police station crime chief Cosmas Ruganzu said the thug fled into the tunnel after an alarm was raised as he allegedly tried to break into a shop. Meanwhile, a woman and her three-week-old baby were burnt to death in their sleep when a fire gutted their house in Kamwokya. Sarah Hawa Namakula, 23, and her daughter only identified as Nanyonga, were burnt beyond recognition. The 2:00am incident also left Namakula’s husband, Kyeyune, with severe burns. He is admitted to Mulago Hospital in critical condition. Kiira Road crime chief Grace Akullo said the cause of the fire was not known.

Storm destroys RDC’s office
BUSHENYI
The roof of the building housing the office of the resident district commissioner (RDC) was blown off by a storm on Thursday. The storm also disrupted members of the district private sector, who were meeting in the same building. Two Catholic churches, including that in Bushenyi town and Ntungamo, were also damaged. At Bweranyangi Girls’ Secondary School, the roof of the kitchen was also blown off. Several community roads were blocked by heavy trees. Rwakanyonyi LC1 chairman Ephraim Kashaija expressed fear that the village might experience famine, saying many gardens were destroyed during the downpour. Last month, a hailstorm destroyed houses and banana, cassava and potato gardens in Bubaare sub-county in Mbarara district. Some families lost cattle, goats and hens.
