Suspected defiler freed

KAMPALA-After completing four of his seven-year prison term on charges of defilement, Herbert Bukenya, was left speechless when the Court of Appeal acquitted him. Bukenya, 29, a former employee of the Kampala City Council, last week bowed several times before the judges after their verdict. He had been accused of picking an underage girl from a school in Jinja and marrying her. However, Justices Galdino Okello, George Engwau and Stephen Kavuma ruled that they had failed to find incriminating evidence against the accused. Bukenya quickly dashed to Luzira Prison to get his belongings.

Five arrested on mob justice

Angel Okello, a Police official, said the culprits allegedly tortured Edward Kalema, whom they accused of breaking into a resident’s shop. “They beat him terribly and told him to reveal his accomplices. He named Erifazi Ssempagala and died thereafter.” Among those arrested are the LC1 chief of Buyaga village, Nalongo Namusisi and Bulera LC2 chairperson, Richard Mugwanya. “These are village leaders and if they reason that they were overpowered by a mob, then they should tell us who was involved,” Okello said.
