KAMPALA
Makerere University yesterday temporarily halted the demolition of illegal structures built by encroachers on its land in Katanga slum, Wandegeya. This was after area local leaders led by Busia Zone chairman, Kasim Musoke Ssentamu, asked the university to give the residents some time to enable them find alternative residences. Sources revealed that the residents, most of whom have lived on the land for over 10 years, have been given up to the end of this week to vacate the plots. Over 100 residents are affected. By yesterday, the university had razed makeshifts on plots 397 and 402 in Wandegeya.

KCC to close dirty buildings
Kampala
Kampala City Council (KCC) is to close down dirty buildings in the city centre effective Monday. According to the health inspector of the Central Division, John Lule, 72 landlords have been asked to renovate their structures. He warned the public against littering the city and urinating on the walls. The acting town clerk, Ruth Kijjambu, told journalists yesterday that vendors have also been ordered to vacate the city streets. She explained that the exercise is part of the preparations to make the city clean ahead of the Commonwealth summit in November. During the operation, stray livestock will be impounded. “We used to impound animals and give them back to the owners, but this time we shall auction them immediately,” Kijjambu warned.
