SAVE the Children in Uganda has allocated sh600m to educate 25,000 children in Kasese district for the next five years, reports John Thawite.

The children left school during the 1996-2001 Allied Democratic Front insurgency in the area.

The charity’s western regional adviser, John Ekwamu, told district officials at the Teachers’ Resource Centre in Rukoki on Thursday that the money would be used for the accelerated learning programme, a component of the “re-write the future” strategy.

He stressed that the programme was being tested in the post-war area before being introduced in Bundibugyo. Lake Katwe sub-county and Katwe-Kabatoro town council have benefited from the project.

Ekwamu added that the programme’s objectives included the establishment of a good learning environment by putting up appropriate infrastructure, recreation facilities and retraining of staff.

Flanked by other officials from Save the Children in Uganda, Ekwamu, on behalf of the organisation, pledged a motorcycle to the district education department to be used in monitoring the programme.
