They may be husband and wife, but marriage seems to have no place in politics. The State Minister for Regional Affairs, Isaac Musumba, on Wednesday told the people of Kamuli not to vote for his wife, Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, in the LC5 chairperson by-elections.

Speaking to voters at Buzibirira trading centre, Musumba urged them to vote for Stephen Mubiru, the NRM candidate. Mrs. Musumba is contesting on the FDC ticket.

“I belong to the NRM party and I can’t support any candidate belonging to another party. I therefore call upon you to stand by me and give your mandate to Mubiru. I can’t support my wife because she belongs to FDC,” Musumba said, attracting thunderous applause from a mammoth crowd.

Mubiru was nominated on Thursday in the company of several NRM party officials like Budiope MP Henry Balikoowa and Iganga LC5 chief Asuman Kyafu.

They held a procession through Kamuli town before heading for Busibirira, where they held a rally. Mrs. Musumba was nominated on Tuesday while Paul Lubowa (Independent) was nominated on Wednesday.

The seat fell vacant after the former chairperson, Kawoya Kaugu, was ousted from office by the High Court for lacking the minimum academic qualifications.

The Electoral Commission chief, Eng. Badru Kiggundu, announced May 10 as the voting date.
