ELECTIONS for the interim chairperson of Nyadri district will be conducted on March 29, according to the Electoral Commission (EC). The district which was curved out of Arua and comprises Maracha and Terego counties, was among the 11 created in July 2006.

Although elections in the other 10 districts were held in November, Nyadri was left out because of a disagreement on whether to establish the headquarters at Kubala in Terego or Nyadri in Maracha.
The controversy was aggravated when the Terego MP, Kassiano Wadri, petitioned the High Court challenging minister Kahinda Otafiire’s declaration of Nyadri as the headquarters.

While meeting local politicians at Nyadri on Thursday, the EC chairman, Badru Kiggundu, said they were unaware of the court petition. “The EC did not receive a copy of the petition nor a court injunction halting the elections. This is why we are here to ensure that the people get an interim chairperson.”

He said the 21 councillors from both Maracha and Terego are entitled to vote.
Kiggundu noted that the elected chairperson will serve for six months after which the EC will conduct elections under universal adult suffrage.

The returning, officer Richard Onoba, said nine candidates from both counties had picked nomination forms.

Kiggundu noted that the success of elections depended on the party’s willingness to ensure a smooth and violence free exercise. Only two out of the 10 councillors from Terego attended the meeting.

He urged those who boycotted the meeting to turn up for voting, to facilitate service delivery in the district.
