THE Police in Luweero are investigating a weekend incident in which three children were burnt to death when a mysterious fire gutted their house while they were asleep. The incident took place at 10:00 pm at Kayindu village in Bamunanika county. The district crime chief, A.K.Oweka, on Monday identified the deceased as Sharif Yawe, four, Jaziri Bugembe, one and Jalia Naddamba aged seven.

Mistreatment of scribes probed
THE criminal investigation department is to head an investigation into allegations that journalists were mistreated by the Police recently, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has said. “I have never received any formal complaint from journalists about the Police manhandling them. I am going to put up a team to find out what really happened,” Kayihura said. The Uganda Journalists Association accused the Police of mistreating reporters during the High Court siege on March 1.

THE hearing of the Government application against the release of the nine People’s Redemption Army (PRA) rebel suspects on bail did not take off at the Kampala High Court yesterday because the Solicitor General, Lucien Tibaruha, was absent.

Magistrates sworn in
KAMPALA - Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki has sworn in three magistrates who were recently appointed by the Judicial Service Commission. Juliet Harty Hatanga, Beatrice Stella Atingu and Abigail Agaba Akampurira were sworn in on Monday in Odoki’s chambers. A statement from the judiciary’s spokesman, E.O. Kisawuzi, said Odoki urged the magistrates to observe the principles of independence, impartiality and integrity.

Lukyamuzi to appeal ruling
KAMPALA - Former Rubaga South MP Ken Lukyamuzi is to appeal to the Supreme Court over compensation from the Government for losing his seat. The Constitutional court rejected the petition on Monday. Lukyamuzi had sought clarification on whether the Inspectorate of Government acted lawfully in removing him from Parliament for failing to declare his wealth.

Declare wealth, MPs reminded
KAMPALA - The deputy Speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has reminded MPs to declare wealth in accordance with the leadership code. Kadaga, during yesterday’s plenary session, said they should hand in their declaration forms to the Inspector General of Government before the March 31 deadline. The forms were sent four months ago. The law was passed in 1992 to strengthen the fight against corruption through accountability.
