SENIOR three and four students of Bweranyangi Girls’ secondary school were on Thursday suspended for leading a strike, reports Chris Ahimbisibwe.

According to the school headmistress, Jane Tumusimirwa, the decision was taken after meeting the board and administration members.

“We have decided to send away all students of S. 3 and S. 4 because they are the ring-leaders of the strike.”

Students staged a strike demanding that the administration buys a school bus.
They were also bitter that the school did not allow them to have dances with boys from Ntare school.

The anti-riot police was deployed at the school on Monday night after the students tried to destroy the office of the deputy headmistress and the library.

“Although some money had been contributed by students towards the purchasing of the bus, it is not yet enough. On the issue of Ntare students, this is a church-founded school. How do we allow dances between boys and girls?” one teacher who preferred anonymity asked.

However, sources in the school said the strike was instigated by some members of staff who want to fail the headmistress.

On Wednesday, the students refused to attend a meeting converged to meet the West Ankole diocese Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Yonah Katoneene. Katoneene is also the school’s board chairman.

Tumusimirwa, however said the students would be recalled after another meeting with the board.
