THE British High Commission has donated sh5.6m to help buy equipment for the mini-cricket development programme.

High Commission official Richard Hamilton handed a cheque to Asiatic Sports’ Rajan Singh to supply all the equipment. This was at the end of the national finals at Lugogo on Sunday.

Kasese’s Bulembia Primary School defended the U-14 boys’ title when they beat Iganga Boys PS in the final.

Namuhuga PS dumped champions Budo Junior School to lift the girls’ U-14 title while St Joseph from Mukono made light work of Soroti’s Rock View to lift the U-11 girls trophy.

Budo Junior later got reason to smile after stopping East Kololo to win the boys’ U-11 title in a closely contested final.

MTN promotions and sponsorship manager Aggrey Kagonyera pledged to continue sponsoring cricket development countrywide.

The mini-cricket programme was jointly sponsored by MTN, Stanbic Bank and the British Council to a tune of over sh37m. The schools event attracted over 15,000 pupils from 146 primary schools countrywide.

* New Zealand head into this week’s World Cup Super Eights with a ringing endorsement from one of their fiercest opponents on the cricket field.

Ian Chappell, who led Australia in their first two full series against New Zealand (1973-'74), believes the World Cup final in Barbados on April 28 will feature the two trans-Tasman rivals.

“The likelihood is that still only New Zealand has the skill and courage to challenge Australia,” Chappell wrote in his column on the cricinfo Web Site (www.cricinfo.com).
