Power, sex and the Alpha male

I know it; I am supposed to be thinking of Easter — and was actually doing so, when a woman called Jamilah Nakku interrupted me with a story idea. She said you cannot play with a tiger and keep quiet about it. Such feats are difficult to conceal, especially if the tiger is a whole vice-president.

So, I said, ‘hmm’, to mean that I feel pity for the VP Gilbert Bukenya and all his colleagues in power. Only a few of them have no known female skeleton in their closet. Their wives have given up, got alternative survival mechanisms or made do with the prestige of associating with power.

I know what their problem is, only that I just do not know how to spell it.

Nature designed sex to make the male feel like a conqueror and for him to enjoy sex and keep it going, you have to praise him with such titles as the tiger, the greatest, the king of kings.…. And as sex is about power, power is about sex for a man. Give a man tremendous power or lots of money or a gun they can use freely and he will start getting frequent erections.

Many use the erections elsewhere and should the grieved wife complain, they will tell her to comply or burst. Usually she complies and the Alfa male will go on plundering. All these are a true reflection of the male user’s manual.

Look at our brother animals, which are still in closer touch with their natural instinct. All males have a natural tendency to organise themselves in a hierarchy. For animals, it comes with power and sexual rights over whoever falls below your level. In park animals, the Alfa male can mate with any female and all females would want to be associated with him because he is the fountain of the fittest offspring. But he has one special female no other animal can mate with.

His second in command can mate with any other female except the boss’ female (unless the boss is not around).

Number three will not touch the special partners of the Alfa male and his 2IC. Whenever an Alfa male is overthrown, the ‘swearing in’ includes mating with his special woman, which is considered the final nail in the coffin of the ex’s kisanja.

It used to be the same for humanity. Kings had every woman at their disposal, warrior tribes would raid for and loot women for sharing and people were mating according to grades.

In modern world, men in power instinctively know that all women beneath them can mate willingly and it is a very tempting feeling to live with. Many plunder and conquer sexually and society knows better how to turn a blind eye because the Alfa male is the giver of jobs, deals, money and patronage. Even when he is guilty, you can be sure of a cheering crowd, firing blame on scapegoats when the culprit is the guest of honour.

At Kakiri, Mahogany even asked: ‘Who does not have relationships?’

I remember one presidential advisor, Gertrude Njuba, laughing at detractors like Besigye who were threatening to publish a list of M7’s alleged relationships, saying, and I will quote: “In Africa, a man who gets many women and children with other women is a great man. Such a man cannot lose votes because of that”.

I write this to show how difficult it is to be the Alfa male, with some women flashing by as if daring you to take a bite. You have all the power and capacity to do what some parts of your bulging body are demanding as well as the urge to humiliate your foes. It is easy to succumb to the pressure of snatching some Nakku from your political rival’s embrace.

It is a natural demonstration of being more man than other men; the Alfa male.
