RITA Nekesa and Amina Kibone will lead Mbale Tigers’ title defence as the Makerere Table Tennis open championship starts today.

The four-day event kicks off with the cadet action, which will see Mbale Tigers — a team that has dominated the cadet category for the last three years — this time face stiff competition from Sharing Hall, Nsambya Primary Scholl and Nakasero.

“We expect all the top junior stars to be in action as the tradition of the event,” said Makerere University table tennis captain David Owiny. The tournament is sponsored by Fotogenix, who have bankrolled the event for the last five years.

This is the seventh edition of the tournament.

Senior action starts on Saturday with the men’s team event.

Meanwhile, Rashid Sharif, Ali Warioba and Canisious Swehele arrive today from Tanzania, to boost the men’s senior open competition. They will be taking on local stars including Kevin Mafabi and veteran Paul Mutambuze and George Yiga, who were the finalists at the national open last year.
