KAMPALA
Preparations are underway for the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) annual delegates’ conference. Party leader Miria Obote told journalists on Wednesday that the National Executive Committee would meet on May 11 to consider amendments to the constitution before the conference is held. Failure to hold the conference has became a court matter, after Prof. Patrick Rubaihayo and Eng. Darlington Sakwa were on Monday granted permission to institute action on their own behalf and that of 114 other discontented members of the party. They claim that the UPC party president has refused to comply with the party law that provides for the conference. But Miria said the ‘detractors’ were calling for a meeting so that they could remove her from the party leadership.

Speaker remanded
KABALE
Court on Wednesday remanded the Southern Division council speaker, Apollo Runaku, for allegedly threatening to kill his uncle, Prof. John Rwomushana. Prosecution led by Thomas Jenere claimed that on December 26, 2006, Runaku attacked Rwomushana as he took a team of surveyors round his land at Bataka Cell in Kirigime, in the municipality. It added that Runaku used a panga to threaten Rwomushana, saying that he should not proceed with the surveying of the land without involving the whole family. Runaku, who appeared before Grade one Magistrate Juliet Nakitende, denied the charge and accused the Police of torturing him while he was in custody.
