LAST week the media was awash with the debate on the case of Pader RDC Santo Okot Lapolo, who caned a teacher before his pupils.

The teacher was caught red-handed administering strokes to pupils and Lapolo did the same to him, allegedly to discourage him and other teachers from the use of corporal punishment.

The education ministry banned corporal punishment in schools, and the teacher was at fault to cane the pupils.

However, Lapolo’s act is even worse than the teacher’s. As a senior leader in the district, he should know better than righting a wrong by committing another.

He should have used other channels to get the teacher reprimanded like the education office in the district; the Police, as well as the school administration.

Teachers in Uganda are a reviled lot; despised, underpaid and overworked. Caning one of them before his pupils takes away the little respect they had.

How is that teacher to face his class again? The RDC should be disciplined.
