KABAROLE district has recruited 150 teachers.

According to the district education officer, Victoria Rusoke, the district had vacancies for 100 teachers both in primary and secondary schools. They also wanted to replace the 50 untrained teachers with trained ones.

She noted that lack of enough teaching staff contributed to the poor academic performance in some schools.

Rusoke said the teachers sat for interviews last week and will soon be posted to their schools.

“We have recruited more teachers who will be posted to some of the schools especially those in rural areas. The district also wanted 50 more trained teachers to replace the untrained ones the district had employed.”

Briefing journalists in her office at Mucwa, Fort Portal municipality on Thursday, she said the district needs 1,670 teachers, according to the Ministry of Education. She promised that they would soon reach that number.

Rusoke said the teachers who were earlier recruited in rural schools stopped working because they were not being paid.

She also said some of them were staying in the town and faced the problem of transport to the schools daily.

“The teachers were not given accommodation and they found it expensive to travel everyday. They were also not given salaries because some of the schools are not fully funded by the Government.”

Rusoke said they had written to the Ministry of Education and Sports for more support.

The introduction of Universal Primary Education in 1996 and Universal Secondary Education this year has led to a tremendous increase in the number of students and there is a need for more teachers.
