TWO boda-boda cyclists on Wednesday testified against a Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) soldier accused of killing three people in Mbale on April 6.

Pte. Zephar Muhumuza attached to the 2nd Battalion is on trial for the murder of Rukia Namusoga, Collin Nabende, a motorcyclist and Moses Kiwani, a private security guard.

He allegedly committed the offence at around 3:00am on Naboa Road in Mbale municipality.

Muhumuza, 23, who was assigned to the Office of the Vice-President, is said to have committed the offence when the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, was in Mbale on a tour of the eastern region.

Muhumuza pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Bulaimu Kasiyo, a resident of Doko Nsambya village in Bungokho sub-county, told the UPDF 3rd Division Court Martial that he transported the accused to Mt. Elgon Hotel where he picked a gun.

“He later threatened to kill me before he forced me to drop him near the scene of the murder.”

Kasiyo said while he was telling his friends how he survived death in the hands of his “customer,” he heard gunshots coming from the direction of Mukwano Restaurant, where he had dropped the accused.

Col. Moses Diba Ssentongo chaired the seven-man court that sat at the Mbale Municipal Council Chambers.

Kasiyo identified the accused from a group of soldiers during an identification parade held at the Central Police Station, Mbale.

However, Kasiyo was asked to explain the circumstances under which he received sh10,000 from a member of the UPDF Special Investigations Bureau to facilitate his transport to the station during the investigations.

Another witness, Siraj , said he saw the accused killing Rukia.

“I was talking to Rukia when the accused came and asked what was wrong with the prostitutes in Mbale. He asked for directions to Mukwano Restaurant. When Rukia showed him the stairs leading to it, he shot her.

said he wanted to teach the prostitutes a lesson. He then fired at Namusoga.”

“Out of panic, I fell off my motorcycle and found myself lying at the foot of the accused,” Kirya told court.

He said that the accused rolled over and took off with his gun.
