CRICKET icon Sam Walusimbi will coach the national team on their tour of Australia next month. The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) handed Walusimbi the mantle on Friday. He takes over from Henry Okecho, who quit last month.

“Walusimbi was loved by everyone to become head coach and has already started his work,” cricket association secretary Bashir Ansasira disclosed after a UCA meeting.

The national team has been in camp without a substantive coach. A team manager will be named before the team heads to Australia for the International Cricket Council Division Three World Cricket League.

Having been demoted from automatically qualifying to the Mini-World Cup in 2005, Uganda will have to finish among the top two countries to earn back the status.

Meanwhile, South Africa based semi-professional Joel Olweny is yet to regain his batting rhythm. He has had poor displays during the two trial matches he has played. The upper order batsman scored 13 runs in the first game and had four runs on Saturday.

Lawrence Sematimba meanwhile smashed 63 off 49 balls to lead the Uganda XI to a 38-run victory against the Challengers XI in the sixth trial match on Saturday.

Jimmy Okello (34) and Kenneth Kamyuka (37) were also outstanding for the national team.
