“There are serious competitors from Kenya and South Africa plus our own local stars. If I don’t take it, I would love to see the title remain in Uganda,” Birungi commented.

South African captain Ruan Botha and his teammates have just won the Africa Zone VI championship. They will be looked at as the favourites in the four-day 72-hole stroke-play tournament. Kenyan Paul Thuo, Nelson Rokoine, Simon Ngige and Tanzanian Omari Shaban are expected to feature prominently.

The annual tournament, sponsored by uganda telecom, will be played at Kitante and Entebbe courses with professionals competing for a sh10m cash prize. Appliance World, Cell2Cell and Azur water are co-sponsors.
