THE High Court in Soroti on Monday evicted a businessman, Ateker Ejalu, from a building he had occupied since the 1970s after an Indian family repossessed it.

Innocent Mugisha, who is in charge of the exercise, said the building on Plot 22, Jumabhai Road, belongs to Mitha Ramzania. It houses the famous 2000 Club, where Ejalu operates a restaurant and lodge.

Mugisha said the court also ordered Ejalu to pay Ramzania rent arrears accumulated since 1996 at a rate of sh200,000 per month.

“We have not attached Ejalu’s property but we have only possessed the house. Ejalu was told by court in 1996 that if he wants to continue occupying the premises he should sign a new agreement with the owner, which he did not,” Mugisha explained.

“I do not know what happened but I am told an Indian wants to repossess the building. I have been in that building for over 20 years. I bought it from the municipal council but the lease expired,” Ejalu said.

Ejalu’s lawyer, Charles Egou, said although the lease for the house had expired, the house still belonged to his client.

“My client acquired that house from the municipal council in 1980 and it should have been the municipal council to be sued and not my client,” Egou said.
