THE Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) has proposed that the Senior Staff and Command College in Kimaka, Jinja, becomes an institute for defence and strategic studies.

Maj. Gen. Benon Biraro, the outgoing commandant, said the EAC chief made the remarks while touring the college recently.

“His official communication through D. Lumumba at the Uganda desk at EAC was received and those responsible should act on it accordingly. The EAC actually wants the college to be referred to as the Institute of Defence and Strategic studies for East Africa,” Biraro said.

He was on Thursday handing over office to Brig. Andrew Guti at a function presided over by the Deputy Chief of defence forces, Gen. Ivan Koreta.

Biraro, the pioneer commandant of the college established in 2003, is to join the African Union military planning unit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “In order to have harmony in the East African federation it’s important to have senior officers of the region training together,” Biraro said.

He added: “Kimaka College is our national pride as its known worldwide. Since last year we have been receiving international students and we expect our first student from Rwanda next year.”

Guti urged Biraro to establish friendly international links for Kimaka while at his new station in Ethiopia.

Koreta said: “I commend Biraro for his able stewardship of this college. He has done well. No wonder he is moving onto a higher continental level,” Koreta said.

The officers and men of the UPDF observed a moment of silence in memory of the late Brig. Noble Mayombo.
