THE row over the chairmanship of Njeru town council in Mukono district has deepened with the Inspector General of Government (IGG) threatening to take action against the councillors.

Faith Mwondha accuses the councillors of disobeying her orders and blocking the removal of the Njeru LC3 chief, Paul Musoke, from office.

In her April 25 to the council, the IGG wrote: “You are committing an offence under the Inspectorate of Government Act 2002 and you are liable to being arrested and prosecuted by this office. Unless you cease your illegal actions, this office shall not hesitate to arrest and prosecute you. No one is above the law.”

The rift begun when the IGG in October 2006, recommended the sacking of Musoke for refusing to declare his wealth as demanded in the leadership code.
Mwondha directed the Njeru town council to meet and the verdict be read to them. The council met on April 12 and the speaker, Dick Muyingo, read the IGG’s recommendation.

However, many councillors have refused to endorse the expulsion of Musoke, arguing that he is social, obedient and cooperative. They protested the IGG’s recommendation through the Mukono district chairperson.

But Mwondha now says the councillors maybe inviting the wrath of the law upon themselves.

“By stating that you are not ready to support his termination, you are frustrating and obstructing the discharge of functions of the Inspectorate of Government, and this is a criminal offence,” Mwondha warned.

In a separate letter to Musoke, the IGG told him that he was illegally heading the town council and he should quit.
“You are conducting council transactions illegally and you are liable to being arrested.”

The letters were copied to the local government permanent secretary, the Police and the electoral commission.
