UGANDA will face unknown quantities when it takes on Hong Kong in the opening match of the ICC Division Three World Cricket League May 27. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released the fixtures, with eight nations taking part in the one-week event slated for Darwin, Australia May 27 to June 4.

The teams have been split into two groups, playing three rounds in a round robin format. The top two in each group will play the semifinals.

Group A comprises Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Italy and Argentina while Hong Kong, Uganda, Cayman Islands and Tanzania make up Group B.

Uganda will play against Tanzania in the second game before meeting the Cayman Islands in the last tie of the preliminaries.

“We definitely welcome the fixtures. The boys are ready to prove their best and if they apply themselves well, they can easily lead the group,” head coach Sam Walusimbi remarked.

The top two countries in this tournament will qualify to play at the 2009 mini World Cup where the top six will automatically qualify to play at the 2011 World Cup. Walusimbi, William Kibuuka Musoke and Yona Wapakhabulo will travel as officials with the team to Australia.

The Uganda Cricket Association has received visas for 13 players and three officials for the tournament after the Australia High Commission asked UCA to reduce the applications from 19 to 16.
