<b>Bombo school head charged</b><br>LUWEERO - Bombo Secondary School headmaster Abdulkarim Kanatta was yesterday charged with embezzling school fees worth sh10m.

LUWEERO - Bombo Secondary School headmaster Abdulkarim Kanatta was yesterday charged with embezzling school fees worth sh10m. The prosecutor said Kanatta, 43, committed the offence between 2004 and 2006. The former vice-chairman of the school board of directors, Samuel Kalyowa, told court that Kanatta collected fees from students without remitting them to the bursar. He added that the complaint was raised by students and parents. Appearing before the school board of directors, Kanatta reportedly denied the claims, saying parents were too poor to raise the sh10m he is accused of embezzling. The case was adjourned to May 28.

Bus park commissioned
MBARARA - The mayor, Wilson Tumwine, on Monday commissioned the Mbarara bus park after it was renovated. Tumwine said renovations cost sh50m, adding that the money was raised from fees paid by bus companies and traders operating in the park. “We are contented that the money was properly used and I thank residents for taking part in developing their town. We need to keep it clean,” Tumwine said.

MP tips on UPE success

RAKAI - Kakuuto MP Matthias Kasamba has asked the Government to make the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme compulsory for it to succeed. He noted that many parents withdraw their children from school to look after animals and do petty jobs, especially on market days. He was speaking at a music, dance and drama competitions at Kimukunda parish in Kasasa sub-county.

DP councillors summoned

MITYANA - The Police have summoned three Democratic Party councillors for allegedly inciting bodaboda cyclists against paying monthly dues. The crime chief, Angel Okello, identified them as Margaret Kalyango, Joseph Robert Katende, and Ahmed Katende. Motorcyclists are charged sh5,000, while bicycle riders pay sh3,000 per month. Mayor Henry Kamya also complained that the three were sabotaging council activities.

Tree campaign in Kabarole

KABAROLE - The district Woman MP, Margaret Muhanga, has opposed the proposed give-away of part of Mabira Forest to a sugar firm. “How do I stand in Parliament to say that the Government should give-away Mabira then I ask people to plant trees to preserve forests?” she asked. Addressing councillors in Fort Portal on Tuesday, she urged each home to plant 40 trees.
