SEVEN members of the Buganda royal family have dragged Kabaka Ronald Mutebi to court over the administration of the kingdom’s assets.

The High Court has issued summons to the Kabaka to file his defence within 15 days.

Led by 80-year-old Namasole Sarah Natolo of Lukuli near Katwe, a city suburb, the royals filed a 103-page plaint in the High Court. The group, which includes Mutebi’s uncles, is aggrieved by his continued control of land which does not belong to him or to the kingdom.

The Kabaka is sued together with the kingdom’s land board and the Uganda Land Commission.

They want the court to bar the Kabaka, the board and the commission from administering part of the Buganda’s land measuring hundreds of square miles.

The group argues that some of the assets returned to the kingdom under the Statute of 1993 were “not given to the Kabaka and did not belong to the Kabaka.”

They claim some assets belonged to other members of the royal family.
The group stated that the kingdom’s land board had no authority over the assets and properties belonging to Buganda.

The board appointed by the Kabaka manages all the land, including issuing land leases to individuals.

The group argued that the 450 square miles that originally belonged to Kabaka Chwa in his private capacity must be reserved for only his descendants. It is currently managed as part of the kingdom’s estate by the Buganda Land Board.

Other plaintiffs include Prince Daudi Alexander Ssimbwa, Naalinnya Edisa Manjeri Nabweteme, Naalinnya Elizabeth Nakabiri, Princess Juliana Muggale, Prince Kimera Luswata and Prince David Namugala Mawanda

Prince Namugala Mawanda is the heir to late Prince George Mawanda Chwa who was Mutebi’s uncle and a big landlord in Makindye Division.
