UGANDA’S earnings from exports to Egypt have increased to 40%, according to statistics at the Egyptian embassy.

UGANDA’S earnings from exports to Egypt have increased to 40%, according to statistics at the Egyptian embassy.

David Muwanga reports that the statistics show that Uganda earned $25m (about sh42.5b) in 2006, compared to $19m in 2005.

“However, this is still a shameful figure. Uganda needs to increase on the exports to Egypt in order to earn more revenue,” Reda Bebars, the Egyptian envoy said.

Uganda exports meat, coffee, tea and fish to Egypt but imports chemicals, cosmetics, juice, tyres, electric pipes and wire, paper, textiles and garments from Egypt.

The envoy attributed the trade imbalance to Uganda’s delay to join the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa free trade area.
