Webombesa anchors Uganda to second spot

CATHERINE Webombesa won gold and silver to anchor Uganda to second place in the East Africa Senior Athletics championships at Namboole stadium yesterday. Kenya are champions.

CATHERINE Webombesa won gold and silver to anchor Uganda to second place in the East Africa Senior Athletics championships at Namboole stadium yesterday. Kenya are champions.

Webombesa won gold in the 800m race and silver in the 1500m contest.

The 1998 USPA sports personality of 1998 clocked 2:8.21 to beat Kenyan Josephine Nyarundi and Ethiopian Aite Tusa in the 800m race.

The 24-year-old then returned to win silver in the 1500m race that was won by Tusa.

Uganda, that gathered eight gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze, got most of its medals in the field events of the two-day championship that attracted six countries.

Kenya collected 11 gold, eight silver and six bronze.
Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Tanzania followed in that order.
