HE retired from the dance floor in 2005, but did not fade to obscurity. Christopher Kato left the stage, but surely not the trade.

He started ballroom dancing classes, which he conducts on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Ballet school in Nakasero, Uganda German Cultural Society/Alliance Francaise headquarters in Kamwokya and Alleygators at Garden City respectively.

And after about two years since establishing ballroom lessons, Kato will show off the fruits of his sweat as a ballroom instructor.

He has organised the first Uganda amateur ballroom dancing competition. The event will take place at the Basement on July 8.

“After retiring from professional dancing, I realised how much it was part of me; it was more of a game than a duty. I would now like to gauge the progress of my students and my own progress as an instructor. I would also like the public to appreciate ballroom dancing,” he says.

The competition will be in three categories,” he says: Latino (including Tcha, Tcha, Tcha, Jibe, Salsa and Rumba), Ballroom (including the quick waltz) and the fox trot (including the quick step).

Kato adds that the competition will be open to the public and that all participants will have the liberty to register and participate in whatever category they are comfortable with. The best performers in each category will receive a certificate of recognition from the guest of honour, Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda.
