MAKERERE University has launched a resource pack comprising five books on conflict resolution and peace building.

The project under the department of Religious Studies in the Faculty of Arts was sponsored by the Danish government in conjunction with the university.

According to the faculty dean, Prof. Hannington Ssengendo, their mission was to produce a training document that would be used by practitioners engaged in conflict resolution and peace building.

Launching the resource pack at Makerere University Guest House on Thursday, the Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, challenged the university to sensitise political and religious leaders on peace building and conflict resolution.

“When Parliament resumes, you should come and say we professors from Makerere want to give you ideas on peace.”

He advised the opposition to use peaceful means as they strive to assume power.

“I have been challenging my brother Col. Besigye (FDC leader) when he talks about a Tsunami that he is going to use force. You can want to be the one in government, but do not use force and destroy what is there because when you come to power, where will you sit.

“Don't burn State House. Where will you sit when you come into power. Peace building and democracy is like growing crops, you have to weed, prune and nurture them,” the minister explained.

The representative of the Danish ambassador, Peter Jenkins, said peace and development move together and that the resource pack would pave way for peaceful resolution of conflicts in the country.

The project consultant, Freda Ukuutu, said the resource pack constitutes 26 modules. It would be used by NGOs to train personnel on peace and conflict resolution, she added.

“This resource pack is truly a historic turning point. We desire peace and fear for return to the old dark days. We must utilise this pack to resolve our problems peacefully,” said the coordinator, Prof. Akiiki Byaruhanga.
