DISTURBING reports out of Kampala indicate that assistant Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen saved the blushes of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) after he picked up the accommodation expenses of his boss – Berti Vogts during their four day stay in Uganda.

According to impeccable sources, the FA for some inexplicable reason failed to settle the hotel bill of the national team handler prompting Eguavoen to come to his aid by picking up his bills.

According to a Nigerian daily THIS DAY, the incident came to light on Sunday morning when the team was about checking out of the hotel 24 hours after losing 2-1 to the Cranes in a Ghana 2008 qualifier.

However, to the utter surprise of the German sweat merchant officials of the Fairway Hotel, where the team had lodged, said he could not be checked out because he was yet to settle his bills!
A totally bemused Vogts was at a loss at how to respond to what should have been a simple administrative issue taken care off by his employers – NFA.

The paper learnt that Eguavoen saved the German from the embarrassing situation by promptly stepping in to settle the bill with his own money.

Vogts, we learnt was already on a short fuse, following the sub-standard hotel provided for him and his players for such a crucial game. The hotel lacked air-conditioning and only had fans in the rooms.

But while Vogts was left to pay his hotel bill, it was learnt that the team’s camp commandant incurred a bill of over $400 which was promptly settled.

Reacting the FA’s spokesman Mr. Ademola Olajire said while he could not comment on what transpired at the team’s hotel in Kampala “because I was not there”, he did say should it be true Eguavoen would be promptly re-reimbursed.

“He (Eguavoen) will get his money back.”
