ENVIRONMENT state minister Jessica Eriyo has warned Ugandans against cutting trees so as to protect the environment against global warming.

She said global warming is largely caused by the effects of deforestation, burning of bushes and haphazard cutting down of trees without replanting others.

Eriyo lamented that up to 55,000 hectares of forests have been cut down for firewood, charcoal, timber, for farming and building.

The minister was presiding over the World Environment Day celebrations at Laroo boarding primary school in Gulu municipality on Tuesday.

She said burning of bushes turned fertile soil into arid land and releases gases that cause pollution.

Eriyo explained that gases destroy the ozone layer, which stops the sun rays from directly reaching the earth.

Gulu LC5 chairman Norbert Mao said residents of the district loved planting trees and protecting the environment.

He said the 21-year LRA war had caused environmental degradation but pledged that they would plant more trees and guard existing forests.
