THE Mukono district council has endorsed a sh33b budget for the financial year 2007/08. Harriet Nankabirwa, the finance secretary, said the biggest percentage of the money would finance the provision of clean water, education, roads and the National Agricultural Advisory Services projects.

“We are still studying the national budget before we can select revenue sources,” she said on Friday.

She revealed that the Government had scrapped the graduated tax compensation grant.

“We (Mukono district) earned sh1.3b in compensation last year. With its scrapping, we will have to introduce new taxes to enable us fund our activities.”

James Kunobwa, the speaker, expressed concern over reports that district heads of department do not attend council meetings.

“It is mandatory that they attend council meetings. They risk punishment.”

He added that the chief administrative officer had been asked to investigate the matter.
