Samia Bugwe North MP Stephen Mugeni Wasike has asked the Supreme Court to retain him in Parliament.

The High Court had earlier ordered Mugeni to be dismissed from Parliament for getting nominated before he resigned his position as the treasurer of Busia district and for defaming rival Aggrey Awori.
Mugeni rejected the ruling and referred the case to the Court of Appeal, which upheld the High Court’s verdict.

Mugeni’s lawyer, Fred Makada, on Tuesday, however argued that Mugeni resigned as required and informed the town clerk about it in a letter. The town clerk, in turn, wrote to the Busia district service commission secretary, informing him about the resignation, Makada said.

He refuted claims that his client defamed Awori, arguing that he only referred to media reports which could not be relied on.

But Awori’s lawyer Hassan Kamba insisted Mugeni did not resign and was nominated illegally.
